Maths Skills

Term 2

In week 1 we focused on counting on in twos: learning a song to help us and also playing games at the beginning of our maths lesson to help us.

We looked at patterns made when counting on in twos and noticed some interesting things.

This week we are focusing on counting forwards and backwards in 10's. We will use our 100's board and look at the pattern it creates there, we will play a rhythm game and try and beat the time we can can count to a 100 in. We will also have a number of the day and talk about the number that comes 1 before, 1 after and to extend our experts five more, five after, ten more, ten after etc.

In Week 4 we have looked at doubling and we are going to carry this on into Week Five.

Time

We have been looking at 'Time'. We started by looking at what our days look like; what we do at what times and what our favourite times of day were. We then extended this and looked at what we do on what days of the week. We are also working on remembering the order of the days of the week. Following this we looked at months and talked about when our birthdays were and in what season our birthdays fell. We have measured how long things take to do in claps, stomps and clicks and compared one activity to another by using these measurements. Finally we are using our very own clocks to show and tell the time and we will continue to use these through next term.

Term 3

We are starting the term with a focus on fractions: beginning by looking at halves and quarters. We will do lots of talking about equal sharing and we will use equipment and play-dough so that the children can see and manipulate things into halves and quarters.

If you are looking to reinforces this learning at home use the language of fair and equal sharing and look for opportunities to bring this talk into what is happening at home for example; "Shall we cut this apple into halves or quarters? How many quarters would you like?" etc.
