Poi-tastic!

Today Mrs Wetere came to class again to read us some Maori stories and teach us how to do some poi work. She told us that the boys should always stand strong and that traditionally poi was used by Maori men to strengthen their wrists for when they were hunting or fighting.

Senior Readers

Our Senior early morning reading programme is continuing in Term 3 and is going really well. We have some terrific seniors who have volunteered to come in to Room 3 before school and read with the children.

Today Poppy Jade and Angus sat and read with a group of children. They helped them with their reading words and talked to the children about the story as well as listening to them read their book of the day. We love having the Year 7 and 8's help out - thanks guys!

If you want to know more about our senior helpers, check out the Senior Profiles page.

Fractions

For the start of term we will be learning about dividing things into equal parts so people get fair shares. Please draw your busy bees attention to any fractions you use over the week in cooking or when sharing food. For example if you are having pizza show them how it is sliced into 4 or 6 or 8 equal sliced parts. Ask them to help share out food when dishing up dinner or making lunches. They can draw pictures of the things you talk about and bring these to class to share.

A visit from Tilly

We had a lovely surprise the other morning when Bella's Mum and Bella's baby sister, Tilly, came to Room 3 for a visit. Bella loves being a big sister; we think you will be a really terrific big sister to Tilly!

Here are Bella and Sophie with Tilly.

Senior Readers

We are so lucky in Room 3 to have Senior children from Room 5 to come and read and work with us before the bell goes in the mornings. These wonderful Year 7 and 8's give up some of their free time to help the younger students with their reading skills, what terrific role models they are.

Thanks seniors; we love having you in Room 3.

New Term

I hope that everyone has had a relaxing holiday or at least enjoyed the
slower pace that not having to get the children ready for school in the
mornings allows.

The children have certainly come back refreshed, full of beans and ready
to learn. We have had a busy start with Kelly Sports being held on a Monday
morning (straight after assembly for Room 3) and the focus for us is balance.
We have had Constable Ross visiting us delivering the Keeping Ourselves Safe
programme and he will be visiting in Week 2 as well.

I am looking forward to School Interviews and a chance to chat to most of you
about how your child is progressing. We also have the Cross Country coming up
and Room 3 have been practising for this for some weeks now with our daily
run, so we should see some super running on Cross Country Day.

Just a reminder my email is julieg@outram.school.nz if you need to contact me
for any reason. I am available as always before school starts in the morning and
most afternoons after school finishes for a chat if you want to catch me for
anything.  I will continue to blog our Room 3 learning adventures on

Hello Room 3 from Mrs Bellamy Queen Bee!

Hello busy worker bees I thought you might like to see this photo. Mr Bellamy and I found this cafe in Karumba. We are having a lovely holiday and it’s so warm. On average 24 degrees most days. We’ve been to Port Douglas, snorkelling on the reef, sailing on the Ocean Spirit, crocodile spotting on jet skies and we are heading to Hartley's Crocodile Adventures today. Hope everything is going well with you busy little bees

Design Special, a Curious specimen for the Science Table and the School Holidays!

Just look at this wonderful hair clip that Sahara is sporting. Would you believe she designed and made it herself at home. We loved it so much we thought it deserved a blog spot.

So what was the curious specimen and where did it come from. It was an interesting spider that Polly found in the bath. She was so curious she brought it to school. Obviously we couldn't keep Mr Spider as he needed to be free so Polly and Angus; one of our seniors from Room 5, set him free and observed him in the school garden, behind the Allen Centre. Thanks Angus and well done Polly for being curious and interested in the world around you!

Did you know that most spiders have eight eyes and can only tell the difference between light and dark whilst certain spiders have well-developed vision.

What curious and interesting wonders will you see in the holidays. Take a photo for the blog if you find something you want to share when you come back to school or get an adult to send it to me in an email and I will pop it on the blog for you.

Have lovely holidays everyone - we have worked hard in Term 2 and we all need some time to relax and get ready for another busy ten weeks of learning in Term 3.

See you after the holidays!

My Holiday in Vanuatu

I have just been on holiday to Vanuatu with my Mum, Dad and sister. We had a great time. We did lots of things.

This is a fire dance. One of the men put fire in his mouth and blew it out! He looked like a dragon. Here I am lighting one of the fire lamps - don't worry there was lots of adult supervision.

This is the Chief of the town. I was playing drums with him.

We went snorkelling and saw lots of beautiful fish even Nemo in the coral!

Here is my sister with my Dad kayaking. I was with Mum.

This is a lovely dance that some local people did. They wore a kind of bangle on their feet.

I had a really lovely time. I hear some of my classmates have got Island holidays coming up, I hope they have as good a time as we did.
